RAFT Collaborates with NYSCi to Explore Potential in Making, Designing...


Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT), a non-profit organization that has been promoting hands-on interactive learning for 18 years, shared it’s expertise on hands-on teaching methods at the "Design, Make, Play: Growing the next generation of science innovators" workshop held at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCi) January 13-14.


NYSCi in collaboration with O’Reilly Media hosted a two-day workshop last weekend to discuss the potential for making, designing and engineering hands on activities in formal and informal learning environments and to build evidence that these alternative programs engage kids in learning.


The seminar brought together scientists, engineers, technologists, learning science researchers, makers, educators and representatives from federal agencies and educational philanthropies to consider how the do-it-yourself mindset can catalyze innovation in Science, technology, engineering and Math (STEM) education.


Mary Simon, Executive Director and Founder at RAFT, was one of the attendees who explored the connection of Making to education. RAFT, a pioneer in hands-on education since 1994, has always focused on transforming teaching through the use of engaging educational activities that inspire the joy and discovery of learning. Describing her experience at the workshop, Mary Simon says, “It was a great workshop. We want kids to get engaged and excited about the relevance of STEM in their everyday lives and to reduce the dropout rate. We need kids to be 'stoked' about STEM education. This is our focus at RAFT where we make educational concepts fun for kids to learn.”


During the event, participants engaged in project based activities, including design challenges, engineering activities, robotics and making. There was agreement that the culture of schooling is at odds with innovation and that kids need to be empowered with the 21st century skills – critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication.


The weekend ended with a thoughtful discussion on identifying the goals of STEM education and capturing the evidence that these goals are achieved. The workshop contributors also discussed ways to assess learning, looking for evidence of knowledge transfer from one situation to another, content knowledge and the ability to build on ideas.

Big4.com Releases its 2011 Big Four Firms Performance Analysis


Big4.com, the premier social networking forum for professionals and alumni of Accenture, Andersen, BearingPoint, Capgemini, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers PwC announced today the release of the 2011 Big Four Firms Financial Performance Analysis, providing a detailed financial and operating analysis of the performance of the four largest accounting firms in the world. The analysis shows the firms enjoyed outstanding revenue growth from 2010 to 2011 after a severe revenue decline in 2009, and stabilization in 2010, to solidify a rebound arising from the global economic slowdown. 2009 marked an abrupt reversal of five straight years of double-digit revenue growth.


After a moderate 2010, 2011 fiscal year saw large increase in revenues for Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers, with revenues increasing between 7.6% and 10.1% from 2010, as firms got a strong boost from a general global recovery, enhanced equity markets, improved credit conditions, and better M&A and IPO activity, all of which spurred client demand, especially for Advisory Services and in Asia. Revenues increased in most developed regions, while growth continued at high levels in emerging markets of Asia and Latin America. Despite the limited data points that the firms report each year, our exclusive look at eight years of financial performance of these firms shows some very interesting trends and insights across firms, geographies and service lines.


In 2010, Deloitte had surpassed PricewaterhouseCoopers to become the largest Big Four firm, reporting revenues of $26.578 billion and growth of 1.8%, just ahead of PwC’s revenues of $26.569 billion and growth of 1.5%. Deloitte beat PwC by a small but significant margin of only $9 million. In 2011 however, PricewaterhouseCoopers regained its leadership position with revenues of $29.2 billion, up 10.0%, which exceeded Deloitte’s revenues of $28.2 billion, up by 8.4%, by more than $400 million. Ernst & Young placed third with 2011 revenues of $22.9 billion but its revenues rose the slowest among the Big Four with a 7.6% increase from 2010. KPMG remained the smallest firm with revenues of $22.7 billion, but had the highest growth at 10.1% and reduced the gap with Ernst & Young to only $170 million.


From 2010 to 2011, combined revenues for all the four firms in US dollar terms rose 9.0% to a historic record of $103 billion, a level which even surpassed the previous high of $101 billion in 2008. Audit revenue increased by 5.7% from 2010 to 2011, Tax revenue was also up by 7.1%, and Advisory revenues continued their strong streak, increasing by a solid 15.9%. The depreciating U.S. dollar over the reporting period helped firm post higher growth numbers in U.S. dollar terms. In local currency terms, revenues rose by somewhat lower percentage levels. Americas revenue increased solidly by 9.9% from 2010 to 2011, Europe revenue was also up by 5.4% despite volatility in the region, and Asia revenue growth continued with an outstanding performance of 17.4%. The analysis has further details on performance by global regions and by Audit, Tax and Advisory service lines, and outlook for 2012 and the future.

New Education About the Certified Organic Farming and Food Production...


Sharon Kleyne, host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water syndicated radio talk show, recently interviewed Fred Kirschemnann, PhD, of Iowa State University and President of Kirschenmann Family Farms in South Dakota; about certified organic farming, food production costs, soil health, food economics and the cost of a healthy diet. Dr. Kirschenmann has appeared previously on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water, discussing his breakthrough research into dry land farming. He is able to grow crops with just a few inches of annual rainfall as productively as nearby irrigated farms. The key is the soil's organic content, which retains moisture better and also increases the crop's nutrient content.


Sharon Kleyne asked Dr. Kirschenmann about certified organic farming. He noted that this is a complex field and that a farm can be certified as "organic" as long as they don't use any disallowed substances. Large monoculture farms (that grow only one crop and do not rotate) can be certified as organic even though their agricultural practices may not attend to the needs of the soil. He is highly skeptical of imported "organic" products.


Dr. Kirschenmann believes it is cost effective to pay a little more for organic foods to support the health of the planet.


Sharon Kleyne and Dr. Kirschenmann had a lengthy discussion of food costs. Dr. Kirschenmann pointed out that if US consumers had to pay the full cost of food production, without subsidies on any level, it would increase shelf prices by about 40%. Currently, neither consumers nor farmers pay directly for the cost of environmental and soil damage from monoculture crops, chemical fertilizers and salt contamination of the soil from irrigation using water from deep aquifers.


It was pointed out that while foods costs in the United States seem fairly low, they are only low with respect to percentage of total income because total income is high. Measured in terms of "cost per calorie," food prices in the US are actually rather high, by world standards.


Also, the ready availability, and constant promotion of unhealthy foods and poor diet choices, increases the amount of illness (obesity, cardiovascular disease, tooth decay, etc) and adds significantly to the cost of health care. There is a complex interrelationship between food production practices, diet, health, economics and other social costs.


Sharon Kleyne and Dr. Kirschenmann concluded with a discussion of diet, food production and health. They encourage purchasing whole foods, organic produce and meats. Dr. Kirschenmann advocates dry land farming because the system relies on soil with a heavy organic content, which not only retains water better but makes food healthier with less need for artificial chemicals or indiscriminate water usage.


Mrs. Kleyne emphasized the importance of drinking enough water in your diet and the use of agricultural practices, such as dry land and organic farming that increase and improve the air's natural, clean humidity.

It is estimated that over one billion Samplers have been enjoyed since 1912, and a large number of those empty boxes can still be found in desk drawers, cupboards, and attics filled with keepsakes, recipes, baseball cards, buttons, and the like. The Sampler is truly a part of American life.


Many clever ideas have helped pave the way for the Sampler’s historic 100-year success.        
The yellow, cross-stitched design is one of the greatest packaging ideas in history. The original 1912 package had an aged yet ageless look suggesting the box had been around for 100 years giving first time buyers a sense of confidence in their gift choice. The Sampler was the first box of chocolates with an index showing each candy inside – now a boxed chocolate standard. The Sampler was the first packaged product in the U.S. to be wrapped in cellophane and the first to be nationally sold in the best drug stores across the country. By 1915, over 19,000 independent drug stores proudly offered the Whitman’s Sampler. An incredible achievement today, let alone nearly a hundred years ago.


The Sampler is the most advertised box of chocolates in history.
America’s love affair with the Whitman’s Sampler has been fueled by the elixir of advertising.    Many of the ads produced over the decades are true works of art created by the best illustrators and photographers of the day. No one can forget the famous slogan A Woman Never Forgets the Man Who Remembers or Here’s How I Remember! Why Don’t You?. The latter became unforgettable in the 1950s when Hollywood’s biggest movie stars including John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, and Elizabeth Taylor told America those very words while holding a Sampler. No million dollar endorsement checks for these stars. They were paid in Samplers and a mention of the actor’s upcoming motion picture. Today, the Sampler is a regular in popular culture, showing up in countless movies and television shows as a welcomed gift.


The Whitman’s Sampler is a national treasure.
For as long as anyone can remember, a Sampler has been a special gift from the President for important guests who visit the White House and those traveling on Air Force One. It’s even packaged in its very own Presidential tin. In 1991, the Sampler’s place in American history was further recognized when it was added to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. And to American servicemen, the Sampler has been a comforting gift from home. During World War II, handwritten notes of encouragement were packed into Sampler boxes and sent to the fighting troops. This tradition was continued in 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Sampler boxes with hand written notes were delivered to American troops overseas.
